During the winter months we typically focus on staying warm and avoiding the nasty cold and flu bugs that may be circulating. For those who suffer from seasonal allergies, it is too easy to forget we even have them until spring rolls around. All of a sudden, we’re sneezing, sniffling, and our eyes may start to itch or burn along with our nasal passages, ears and skin. This among other symptoms are a major bummer for some.
There is hope! Spring and summer can be enjoyable and symptom free. Here is a little help in understanding seasonal allergies.
Why do people suffer from seasonal allergies?
When some people are exposed to certain pathogens or allergens it triggers an immune response to release histamines, a neurotransmitter involved in the body’s inflammatory process. This inflammatory process is important for attacking invading micro-organisms. However, in the case of seasonal allergies, it is often an overreaction of the immune system, which means, that the immune system is dysfunctional. This is why only some suffer from seasonal allergies and others do not.
The good news is . . .
Through acupuncture and the use of herbal medicine, we can help bring the immune system back to proper function. It is typically misconceived, that the external triggers of allergies such as dust mites, pollen, and molds are to blame. We need to bring the focus internally and regulate our immune function to nip this situation in the butt. This is NOT a matter of living with the cards we are dealt.
Over the counter treatments
Antihistamines and decongestants are typically the ‘go to’ when dealing with this affliction. They are usually effective in providing immediate relief, which in TCM, we refer to as treatment of the branch. However, there are side effects associated that are both short term and long. Short term side effects include; drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, rebound congestion (which leads to dependence), restlessness or moodiness, fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, trouble with urination, blurry vision, and confusion. In TCM, long term consumption of these medications dry up the body’s fluids, disrupting the circulation of Qi (energy) and blood. This can lead to increased reaction to allergens, insomnia, emotional disturbances, restlessness, hormonal imbalances, afternoon or evening fever or sweats, ringing in the ears, dizziness, lower back, knee and bone weakness or pain, low libido and more.
TCM plan of action
We spoke about branch treatment now let’s deal with the root. Timing is key when it comes to treating seasonal allergies. Our current health is often a reflection of how healthy we were in the previous season. So, if one suffers from allergies in spring, then the critical time for treatment is in the winter. One should allow a minimum of one month to regulate the immunity prior to when symptoms appear for lasting results. Beginning treatment at the time of onset is effective for, and will focus on, symptom relief/ branch without negative side effects. When one suffers from allergies year round, the treatment should begin in the season prior to when symptoms are at their peak.
Stop living with seasonal allergies and break the cycle of over the counter drugs which only mask but create more health issues. Don’t wait to bring your body back to balance to fix your immunity. With a little help, give your body the chance to fix itself.
